Chapter Eleven: A New Illness

It was many months before Elven grew truly accustomed to living among the people of Kiriün. He was glad of the sense of purpose that came from his new position as healer to the high court, but he soon came to learn that the high court had often little need for a healer—the nobility lived well, and suffered less illness and disease than the peasants of the Hösland, or the Outlands. As a part of this nobility, he also lived well, and despite his reservations came to appreciate not living in constant hunger, or fear of predation. No savage beasts dwelled within miles of Courerà, and few in the king’s hall had even heard of a fierund, much less ever seen one.

In the end, they stayed in Taureth for three months, and Brandyé came to know its folk well, for it was a small town. He would often speak with Bill, who frequently disagreed with him and whose opinions of the world were unwavering. In fact, Brandyé became to Bill an apprentice of sorts, and he learned to fish through ice, though he was never much good at catching anything.

Chapter Nine: The Crossing of the World, Part I

There was much work to be done in preparation for the voyages of Ermèn, Athalya and Brandyé, and it was some weeks before they were able to make their way to the port of Viura Râ in search of a vessel that would take them hence. Brandyé came to the conclusion that, as high a position as the Sarâthen held in the world, even they were not able to travel on a whim to whatever kingdom took their fancy, or to speak with whichever leaders they desired. (It did not occur to him that the Sarâthen might well be able to do so, but he could not.)
